Faction Paradox: A Very Rough Breakdown

Origins

Faction Paradox first appared in Lawrence Miles's BBC Eighth Doctor Adventures novel Alien Bodies, and reappared in the BBC Eighth Doctor Adventures a few times, most notably in Interference

. After he finished writing for the BBC, Lawrence Miles worked with BBV Productions to produce the first audio series, The Faction Paradox Protocols. Soon after, The Book of the War was published by Mad Norwegian Press, followed by a series of novels.

Present state

Currently, Obverse Books is publishing Faction Paradox books, and there is no ongoing audio series (as of September 2023)

Expanded Faction Pardox universe

Within the body of works with licensed connections stretching back to the BBCtv episode An Unearthly Child, commonly known as "the Doctor Who expanded universe", there are various with connections to FP, both legal and aesthetic. A "legal connection" is defined as a license originating in an official FP work, utilised in an indepdendent work, whilst an "aesthetic connection" isn't really defined, but usually has more individual connections to FP than BBC Who, whilst the core of the series/work originates in BBC Who.

The first work of fiction deriving its license from Faction Paradox, but not bearing the FP logo, was More Tales of the City, published in 2012 by Obverse Books. Due to the fact that Obverse books holds (but does not own, as Lawrence Miles simply gives the publisher permission) the rights to , it is possible that this anthology, and its subsequent series, The City of the Saved, technically have the rights to mention FP concepts, but the writers' guide forbids it.

A more indepedent spin-off would be the likes of the Auteur series - The titular character debuted in Obverse Books's A Bloody (and Public) Domaine in "The Book of the Enemey", going on to feature in multiple works by writer Aristide Twain, and others. The first "official entry" in the series (precluded by a number of appearances) was The Cactus and the Corpse, published in Arcbeatle Press's "Horrors of Arcbeatle" Halloween 2023 anthology.

Relevant Doctor Who

Although Christmas on a Rational Planet predates the invention of the Faction Paradox group itself, it includes notable FP worldbuilding such as Grandfather Paradox and the Anchoring of the Thread. Additionally, Unnatural History and The Ancestor Cell have been excluded, as they are less foundational to the series.
